Internal Medicine: The Medically Related Art of Rosemary Feit Covey
Well, something pretty exciting is on the horizon. In June 2005, I approached artist Rosemary Feit Covey and asked if she was interested in a commission to take on the subject of brain cancer. 15 months later, on 10/14/06, this art was premiered at The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia. Now, the ads are starting to appear after Rosemary won an international exhibit at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago, Illinois.Existing Exhibits at IMSS
I did not know much about the International Museum of Surgical Science (IMSS) in Chicago until recently. The name is quite literal. I learned this pretty quickly when I went to their website. Here are just a few of the existing exhibits on display, as shared verbatim from their website:The Universal Condition: Enduring and Alleviating Pain
Nearly every human being experiences pain at some point in life. This exhibit examines issues in the perception of pain and chronicles medicine’s quest to relieve it, from the ancient use of psychoactive plants to contemporary laser therapy, focusing on milestones such as the discovery of anesthesia.Milestones in Medical Imaging: 21st Century Medicine
Radiopharmaceuticals, the gamma camera, the PET scanner, and the balloon catheter have revolutionized the world of medical imaging. These new imaging technologies form the basis of 21st century medicine, allowing doctors an unparalleled look inside the body.Milestones in Medical Imaging: From X-Ray to Nuclear Medicine
"I didn't think, I investigated" – with these words in 1895, Wilhelm Roentgen acknowledged the discovery of a major landmark in modern life: the x-ray. This exhibit interprets the fascinating story of the medical imaging pioneers and the progress in over a century of medical imaging.Supporting Structure: Understanding the Spine and Spinal Surgery
Following Hippocrates' declaration that knowledge of the spine "is the requisite of understanding many diseases," this exhibit pays tribute to the spine's important role in the body by highlighting historical methods of treating spinal injury, and showcasing the technological and surgical advances that have revolutionized the field.Medicina Latinoamericana
Latin American countries contributed to the advancements of surgical science for centuries. Not only have they built institutions that forge advancements in medicine and still thrive today. This exhibit highlights the stories of surgical pioneers that developed groundbreaking procedures, instruments, and medicines used internationally.Polio Exhibit
The centerpiece of this exhibit is a rare working iron lung. The iron lung along with posters from the March of Dimes campaign bring back many forgotten memories of the fear of an incurable disease.

Artist's statement
All this reminds me of Rosemary's comments about her Brain Tumor Series.
"David Craig Welch commissioned this body of work, shortly after being diagnosed with a brain tumor and undergoing major surgery to remove portions of the tumor. David primarily sought to create a visual understanding of his ongoing experiences, both personal and beyond. While minimal formal direction has been given, David has given freely of himself, his thoughts, his writings and access to his medical procedures and doctors."
This will be an absolutely fascinating experience. Who knows what it will be like or what will come of it all. Only one way to find out. Be there and experience the moment.
