More than two years ago, at age 38, I was diagnosed with a lemon-sized tumor in the center of my brain, where eloquent functions such as talking, thinking and writing take place. Although this tumor was widely considered inoperable, New York University neurosurgeon Patrick J. Kelly successfully removed half of it and ongoing chemo has stabilized the remainder.
The month I was diagnosed, I created a website, 38 Lemon (www.38lemon.com), which has evolved into a nonprofit organization focused on brain cancer awareness—from a patient's perspective. But writing only goes so far in expressing my experience with brain cancer. So, I turned to my friend of 30 years, Rosemary Feit Covey, and commissioned brain tumor art, including the work above, which she created from my handwritten journals.
After a year of our working together, this series of artwork earned a solo exhibit that will open on Nov. 2, 2007, at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago. Other pieces can be seen at Covey's studio at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Va., and on the 38 Lemon website.
